Real-time ocean intelligence for anglers & scientists
Reel IQ turns every fishing vessel into a live environmental sensor. Temperature, current, and oceanographic data — collected by the people who know the water best, streamed to a live map, and shared with the scientists who need it most.
Anglers head out as normal. The Reel IQ app runs quietly in the background, logging GPS position, sea surface temperature, and environmental conditions as you move across the bay.
Your vessel's data is transmitted in real time, stitched together with satellite SST layers from Copernicus Marine Service, and rendered as a live heatmap of Algoa Bay conditions.
Anonymised trip data flows into a centralised database, giving researchers access to real time oceanographic records with far greater temporal coverage than current field sampling alone can provide.
A real-time map of Algoa Bay updated continuously as vessels report in. See SST gradients, current boundaries, and upwelling events as they develop — information that changes where fish are.
Copernicus satellite SST data is blended with in-situ vessel readings to produce a map with both broad coverage and high local resolution — the best of both data sources.
No behaviour change required. App will open itself in the background, just go fishing. Reel IQ logs conditions automatically — no forms, no manual entry, no disruption to your day on the water.
Every trip contributes to a long-term ecological dataset covering Algoa Bay. Fishing vessels become the most distributed, cost-effective oceanographic monitoring network the bay has ever had.
Reel IQ was built out of a simple observation: recreational anglers cover more of Algoa Bay, more frequently, than any research vessel ever could. That's an untapped scientific resource.
We're a marine technology startup based in the Eastern Cape, building the bridge between the fishing community and the oceanographic science that depends on understanding this bay. Your catch data stays yours. Your environmental data helps everyone.
Currently in prototype development. We're looking for skippers, ski boat anglers, and charter operators in Algoa Bay who want to be part of building something that gives back to the water they fish.
We're recruiting prototype testers in Algoa Bay — anglers, skippers, and charter operators. Free access in exchange for honest feedback and a few trips with the app running.
Questions about the prototype, the science behind Reel IQ, or partnership opportunities — we'd love to hear from you.
